                                                                     Happy 2018 !

Santa ( daughter, Barbie ) gave us a "Google Home" for Christmas and I have been enjoying it's podcast feature.  Wanted to tell you about two of my favorites for artists.

Artists helping Artists - have so many interesting subjects they discuss that       are of help to artists.  You can pick and choose topics that interest you from      past podcasts

Danny Grant - he interviews top artists of our time.  It is a peak into the           lives of those artists living and working successfully today

You can access the podcasts on your computer by downloading ITunes app and then go to podcasts.  No cost involved.  So give them a try the next time you are painting and want something different from music or audiobooks.    Enjoy !

November Happenings

November has been an extremely busy time.  We finished our Grisalle class, but we will continue to finish our projects in our Open Studio on Tuesdays.   Our class has taken on what can be considered a difficult technique and has done some  beautiful work.  Kudos to the class ! Soon after our class finished, I hosted Tina Garrett for a wonderful 3 day workshop at the Greensburg Art Center. Below are some pictures from that workshop.

The following week I went to Tina's studio in Mo. to study with Romel de la Torre.   Romel 's 3 day workshop focused on portraiture from a live model.  He and Tina are both great teachers.  I am so grateful to have been able to learn from them both.   Here are some photos from that workshop.

Hello everyone.  It is beginning to feel like Fall now that the heat wave is over !  Our Fall class has already begun.
This Tuesday will be our 3rd. class in our 6 week Fall "Grisaille" class.  Week one we discussed the Grisaille method started by the Flemish artists of the past and how we can improve our paintings by including this method as another "tool" in our toolbox of techniques. We also practiced creating a gray scale.
Week two we drew our picture onto the canvas, sprayed on a fixative, and then did our first paint layer called the  imprematura layer or Umber layer.  We are now ready for our second paint layer know as the "dead" layer because it is done using  a monochromatic gray scale - no color.  Below is my portrait of "The Loner" that I am doing to teach this important technique.
Looking forward to our next session this Tues. afternoon.  See you in class !

I am so proud  of the students in my oil painting class.  The classroom walls at GAC look great with all our paintings.  Thank you to all who have chosen to share their work.  This will be a great representation of our class and let people know about us.

REMINDERS
Anyone from the class who wants to paint on Tues. the 4th can join us at 1:30pm as usual.

On Wed. the 5th we will be meeting at the GAC parking lot at 10am to go into Shadyside to shop at Blick's then have lunch.  Check your paint inventory!!

All those who have taken my oil painting class at Greensburg Art Center are invited to bring in their work to be exhibited on the walls of the classroom during the gallery's next exhibit.  We want those who visit the center to be informed of our classes and the great work being done by our artists.  Members of the gallery committee will be at the art center this Friday to help us begin to hang the paintings. Anyone who would like to help with the hanging is welcome to join us.

Roses in my garden are in full bloom and gorgeous.  Since they are the subject of our next class, you are welcome to join me in my garden this Tues. to practice painting these beauties.  The weather this past week has been great and I hope it continues, but in the case of rain, we will meet at the art center as usual and plan to paint roses plein air when weather co-operates.  Here's keeping my fingers crossed !

Easter

Happy Easter to all my painting friends !

To my students:  when I say you must have a clear "concept" before you start to paint, this is what is meant as stated by  David Gray  -"I find that a big deficit that some of my students have is that they do not know what they want their painting to look like. They  have not yet cultivated their vision to a point where they can see, at least to fairly high degree, where they want to go. If you ask me "Does it look right, now?" then you will be completely lost outside of class. My advice: cultivate your aesthetic by studying the paintings you want to emulate. Do master copies. Eventually you will train your eye. You will be able to translate what you see in paint in the way you desire. If you find yourself at a loss, you need to find out why. "Does it look right, now?" - you need to be able to answer that question for yourself. For some, it's not better technique that you need. You need to cultivate your vision. Once you have that, your technique will serve that vision."
